99 was the polydor budget range and the label name refers to the price(99 pence). Since UK was about to go over to decimal currency this was an attempt by polydor to appear topical and trendy. Other 99 albums included budget reissues of albums by Cream, Bee Gees, The Who & Jimi Hendrix.
